How to Use Course Inheritance on Tortal's LMS

Learn how the course inheritance feature works.

Enabling Course Inheritance

This feature needs to be turned on by an LMS admin. The toggle is located within the "Site Behavior" settings, located on the admin page. Please see the image below.

Feature Description

This new feature allows LMS admins to setup any number of pre-determined courses to be awarded completion status based on the completion of one course. Please see the example below.

Example: Every year employees are required to complete certification training. The initial certification requires the employee to complete Course A, Course B, Course C and then a final course titled Certification Test. The following year, the learner is asked to take the certification training again. If the Certification Test is setup with "Course Inheritance," then the learner simply needs to only complete the "Certification Test" and then course completions will also trigger for Course A, Course B, Course C. All course completions are added to the learners training records within the LMS.

How to setup Course Inheritance

Course inheritance settings can be accessed while either adding or editing a new course. The image below shows the first page you'll see when performing either task. Notice the "Course Inheritance" option. When selected, you'll then see an option to select which courses are to be inherited. Once you have these two settings adjusted, continue through the rest of the process until the course is either created or edited.

The course inheritance info is now displayed on the course page as shown in the image below. In this example, when the course titled "Course Inheritance Example" is completed, the learner will receive course completions for not only that course, but also Coaching, Effective Conflict Resolution and Recruiting and Hiring, as shown in the second image below.
